Last year we had the unexpected surprise of an additional helping hand when we arrived at the Basilica to find Liam Presler, an American student volunteering in Guatemala for nine months. Liam was invaluable to us as a pharmacy technician.
This year we were blessed to find two students, both from St. John's University in Michigan, volunteering through the Benedictine Volunteer Corps. Phil Hanson and Theo Eggermont have been teaching English at a local school, but for the last five days they've been with us, helping out Les and Janet in the pharmacies.
In addition to teaching English, both Phil and Theo will be working on sustainability projects while they're in Esquipulas. They're planning on installing solar panels at a library, and after talking with a few of our contingent we may be able to partner with them on a water reclamation and purification project in some of the villages we've visited.
